Campanulas

Campanula  (kam-PAN-u-la)  Bellflower

There are approximately 1500 species of annual and perennial Campanulas, including some of the best of the garden perennials. Most are of fairly easy culture, preferring a moderately rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Poor winter drainage can result in crown rot. Keep watered in the summer and fertilize regularly.

Campanula 'Sarastro' is from the European nursery of the same name. This is a Campanula punctata hybrid with large, very dark purple bellflowers, in size and shape like the popular cultivar Campanula 'Kent Belle' ... but with the very important difference that the flower stems are sturdy and compact, so no staking is required. The very best of this group of Campanulas.

From Japan, by way of Terra Nova Nursery, Campanula punctata ‘Cherry Bells’ is another spreading Bellflower with large, rosy red, pendant flowers with a white edge and spotted throat. The blooms come in clusters above heart shaped foliage.

We aren’t sure of the ancestry of Campanula ‘Hot Lips’, but it sure looks an itty bitty form of Campanula punctata. It has the same spreading habit and the white, flushed pink flowers are the same pendant bells, only everything is much smaller.
