Fern Sale

Sale prices on our most popular ferns

If there were a hit parade of ferns the Japanese Painted Fern, Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’, would be a longstanding #1. Low growing and spreading, it is the most colorful of the hardy ferns, with silver covering most of the frond, sometimes with burgundy markings in the center. It is beautiful when used in mass but the graceful arching habit also looks great as a single specimen. It was formerly classified as Athyrium goeringianum 'Pictum'.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Minutissimum' is a dwarf selection of our native Lady Fern. While it stays much shorter than the species, the clump stays tight and fills in very thickly. For its size it is a good, moderate spreader.

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is a new colorful and more brilliant form of the Autumn Fern. The young fronds of this cultivar are lustrous and orange. Even the fronds at maturity, though green, hold their glossy sheen. The growth habit is identical to the Autumn but as a whole it is dramatically more showy. A wonderful evergreen addition to the fern garden.

Dryopteris  tokyoensis is one of our favorites of the Asian Wood Ferns. The relatively narrow fronds are stiffly upright, in a vase form from a central crown. It is sometimes described with light or yellow green color … while new fronds are light green, mature fronds of our clone (which I assume came from Dr. Mickel) have a rich, almost blue-green color. One of the Mickel Collection™.

Selaginella uncinata, the Peacock Fern, is one of the most unusual plants we grow. Also known as Rainbow Moss, from certain angles the iridescent foliage is an almost unbelievably brilliant blue, changing with the slightest movement of vantage point.  The leaves themselves are finely cut and densely spreading, with the look of a beautiful and intricate oriental carpet, fitting for a plant of Chinese origins. Plants are only winter hardy when well established. We recommend extra protection the first winter or two. Northern gardeners may want to consider growing this as a pot plant.

Selaginella moellendorfii s a more upright form of Spikemoss, with bright green fronds, almost conifer-like. In the south it may stay evergreen overwinter.

Thelypteris decursive–pinnata, the Japanese Beech Fern, is an attractive Asian species with  light chartreuse green fronds, very upright in habit. This is a spreader, but a slow and steady one, unlike some near relatives that can be borderline invasives. It naturalizes beautifully in open woods.

These are attractive evergreen ferns that can provide a tropical look and contrast in the fern garden. Cyrtomium caryotideum is a little more open than other species with fewer pinnae on the fronds. Many people have been successful growing these in Zone 6, but it requires extra protection (out of drying winter sun) and mulching overwinter.

Cyrtomium falcatum var. maritimum is the dwarf form of Japanese Holly Fern, just like the species with shiny green foliage, only smaller. Sometimes listed as Cyrtomium ‘Mini Holly’. Makes a great subject for a shady container garden.

Nursery Propagated Ferns - We do not sell ferns, or any other plants for that matter, that have been collected in the wild. All of our ferns have been nursery propagated. This not only protects wild populations, but potted, nursery propagated ferns are much easier to establish in the garden than plants dug in the wild and shipped bareroot.
