One of the best things about my
job is that I've been able to visit a number of
public and private gardens over the years...and
pretend that it's all in the line of duty.
I've even been able to convince people around here
that it's part of my job description. At this
point I've amassed a collection of quite a few
images, so for those that are interested, I'd like
to share. The slideshow requires the Adobe Flash
Player. The first garden I'd
like to feature is Chanticleer, one of my all time
favorites. Located in Wayne, PA ... outside
Philadelphia. This is the former estate of the
Rosengartens, beautifully maintained, like you
imagine an estate garden must have been lovingly
cared for early in the last century. That doesn't
mean the collections are old-fashioned, though.
Quite the contrary, much here is new and
innovative, sometimes even whimsical (note the
garden furniture). Pay special attention to the
container gardens and the combinations of
tropicals and traditional perennials. They are
open seasonally, and only on certain days of the
week, so be sure to check before you visit. Just
about everything you need to know is on their
website -
