The hybrid Lobelias are sometimes called
the Canadian Tetraploid Group. They began with the breeding program of
Wray Bowden of Ontario. The complex crosses included L. cardinalis, L.
siphilitica, and L. fulgens. The results were hardier plants and larger
flowers, in a range of colors. North of Zone 5 a good winter mulch is
helpful and division will keep the clumps vigorous.
Lobelia ‘Shrimp
Salad’ is a real color break for Lobelias, the flowers are shades
of salmon pink. The habit seems a little shorter than most of the
hybrids.
