Simply one of the best groundcovers for shady areas,
and when established will tolerate dry soils and even compete with tree
roots. Steadily spreading, but usually not as quickly as impatient
gardeners would prefer, the heart-shaped foliage is attractive, and
colorful in season. The spring flowers are delicate, on wiry stems, like
sprays of tiny columbines with especially long spurs.
Epimedium x youngianum ‘Niveum’
has small white flowers.
“Delightful at all times for
many of them are evergreen, their spring leaf tints which follow the
flowers are delicious, and in autumn they fall into tone with the season
with rich tints of brown, russet and gold.”

Eucomis
(YEW-kom-is)
Pineapple
Lily |
|
Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ is a form of Pineapple Lily that was selected by
Plant Delights, in NC. The leaves are strap like, dark purple, very
attractive. The unique flowers resemble tiny purple pineapples. This is
an interesting and unusual specimen for the border in the South and a
container plant in the North. |

This is a group of valuable plants
that deserves much more attention in the garden.
Filipendula rubra
‘Venusta’ is the largest and most regal (earning the name Queen
of the Prairie) with large palmate leaves and fragrant flowers that look
a lot like pink Ostrich feathers. The thick stems are strong but still
may need support at bloom time. They need a rich, evenly moist soil,
especially before and during the summer bloom period. Powdery mildew can
be a problem in the humid south. A location with good air circulation is
the best solution. These plants are long-lived and, although spreading,
are not invasive.

Filipendula purpurea ‘Alba’ is
a little smaller in all parts than Filipendula rubra with a strong upright
habit and dark green leaves. The plume flowerheads are composed of tiny
white flowers with pink stamens. |

Filipendula 'Pink Dreamland'
appears to be a European cultivar, not generally offered here. It
reminds me somewhat of an old variety called Filipendula digitata ‘Nana’
(no longer a valid name) This variety is compact, with soft pink
flowerheads, more appropriate for a smaller garden. |

Filipendula palmata 'Variegata'
is a Japanese cultivar, upright like F. rubra. The foliage is
exceptional - a gray-green splashed with a white variegation. For us
this has been slower growing than other cultivars. The flowerheads are
white. We obtained our original stock from the old Heronswood Nursery,
when it was in WA. |

Filipendula ulmaria ‘Aurea’
is similar in form to its larger cousins but with noticeably smaller,
creamy white flowerheads. Its best feature is its solid bright
yellow-green mounds of foliage |
