Rehmannia elata
has large, dark pink flowers, somewhat Foxglove-like. The leaves
are large, lobed, slightly hairy with some maroon mottling. They will
frequently survive zone 7 winters with extra protection. In colder areas
seed can be collected and plants can be treated as annuals. |

This is a tropical looking plant with
lanceolate leaves growing from a central rosette much like Aspidistra,
the Cast Iron Plant. The evergreen leaves are thick and leathery, up to
12" long. The flowers form a small cluster, green-white, held near
ground level. The fruits are large and long lasting red berries,
containing a single seed.
Rohdea japonica
is grown primarily as a tough evergreen specimen or slow spreading
groundcover in shady places. |

Probably best known for the nearly
ubiquitous Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’, there are actually other varieties
with merit.
Rudbeckia subtomentosa is my choice as an alternative to ‘Goldsturm’.
It’s a little taller and more upright. The daisy blooms are more yellow
and less gold, an easier color to use in the landscape. Additionally,
this variety is highly tolerant of shade. |

Rudbeckia 'Henry
Eilers' is a selection of Rudbeckia subtomentosa that was
discovered in IL. Just like the species but the individual flower petals
are rolled - giving it a quilled effect. Very unique. |

Smilacina
(smi-la-SEE-na) False Solomon's Seal |
|
This native wildflower is
superficially similar to the real Solomon’s Seal, Polygonatum, but the
white flowers are starry and held at the stem’s end, rather than small
bells dangling along the stem. Smilacina racemosa
is easy to establish and the yellow fall color and bright red berries
are an added bonus. |

This genus is known almost
exclusively for one species, Strobilanthes dyerianus,
Persian Shield. There are,
however, some showy hardy species.
Strobilanthes
atropurpureus has Salvia like flowers of dark purple on open,
strong, many branched stems with rounded dark green leaves. This
Siberian native has a shrub like look. |
