These Great Plant Specials have become very popular
with our customers. The plants are not just a bunch of leftovers that
we couldn’t sell, we select some of our most popular varieties and
grow them in large numbers just for these specials. It’s a great deal
for our customers, and, by growing them in large quantities and
selling them in sets of three, we reduce our handling costs
significantly, so we both benefit. |

Amsonia hubrichtii
is a newly popular native species of
Blue Star that has starry blue
spring flowers but with very thin leaves, almost needle-like, giving the
plant a delicate, airy appearance. Even when not in bloom this is an
outstanding foliage plant. The clear yellow fall color of the leaves is
an added bonus.
I’ve seen a great deal of variation in leaf
form, wide to thin, in the seed grown plants of this species. They may
all technically be Amsonia hubrichtii, but if they don’t have the
attractive narrow leaf...what’s the point? Our plants are all
vegetatively propagated to insure a uniform, thin leaf form.
Single plant price $8.95 ea.

Aquilegia chrysantha
‘Yellow Queen’ is a named form of the western native Golden
Columbine. The large, showy blooms are deep golden yellow with long,
sometimes lighter colored spurs. Here in the mid-Atlantic this species
is by far the longest blooming and our plants generally flower well into
the summer. If I were forced to chose just one Columbine to grow, this
would be it. In the border.

These are close relatives of
the Asters with the same rugged and easy care dispositions
as other native species. They bloom in late summer and
fall, make great cut flowers and are excellent companions
for the blues and purples of late blooming Salvias.
Boltonia asteroides ‘Pink Beauty’

compact plant with an informal flowing habit.

These South
African succulents thrive in lean, well
drained soils in full sun. The daisy
shaped flowers need sunlight to open.
Plants root along the stems and will form
a thick mat in a short time.
Delosperma cooperi

off, summer and fall. This is one of the
larger flowered species and the hardiest
we know.

I really like the Foxglove flowered hybrid Penstemons.
Unfortunately most of the varieties I’ve tried simply do not survive
here in the mid Atlantic. The closest I have come is
Penstemon ‘Sour Grapes’,
which has good showy purple flower spikes over a long season and has
proved to be rock hardy here. Single
