Actinidia (ak-tin-ID-ia) Hardy Kiwi |
|
All hardy Kiwis are relatively fast growing, twining vines that can
provide fast coverage. Actinidia kolomika 'Arctic
Beauty' is a non-fruiting selection that has large,
heart-shaped leaves with a random white and pink variegation. The colors
are best in cool weather and in our summer heat usually disappear. |

Hydrangea petiolaris, the
Climbing Hydrangea is one of our
most requested plants. Relatively slow growing while it is young, faster
as it matures, it climbs by holdfasts like ivy. The leaves are
attractive dark green and the flowers resemble the blooms of a white
Lacecap. Perfect climbing the trunk of a large tree or a masonry or wood
wall. Hydrangea
petiolaris ‘Mirranda’ has “dark green leaves display distinct,
irregular yellow margins. The variegation is stronger earlier in the
season and becomes more distinct as the plant ages. It forms flat topped
clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers.” |

This is a clinging vine, closely
related to the climbing Hydrangea, with similar ivory white blooms in
summer. This species is particularly valuable because it is one of the
few flowering vines that will tolerate shade. It is very effective
growing up a wall or up a tree trunk.
Schizophragma
hydrangeoides ‘Moonlight’ has heart shaped leaves mottled with
silvery highlights. There is a planting at the Scott Arboretum that
effectively uses this variety as a shady groundcover. |
